According to the dictionary, a Milling Machine is:
A machine tool, that uses a rotating a cutter (milling cutter) to produce flat or formed surfaces on a workpiece, usually by moving the work past the cutter.“
In brief, you hold a cutting tool, such as an endmill in the rotating spindle. A suitable work piece is clamped to the table, for example in a vice, and by turning the handles, you move the workpiece against the cutter. Each rotation of the handles advances the table by a predetermined distance, which allows you to make very accurate cuts.
